Ash-Free Sunscreens

Updated: Jun 8, 2019

One of the main reasons I hear for not wearing sunscreen daily is that it’s hard to find a sunscreen that doesn’t look ashy or impart a white or bluish tint (especially with mineral sunscreens) on deeper complexions like mine. Ahead are a few sunscreens that I have personally found to be ash-free and deeper skin tone friendly.

BLACK GIRL SUNSCREEN

Rating: Broad spectrum SPF 30

What’s good: Ultra sheer, hydrating, fragrance free and affordable. I was blown by how sheer this is.

Finish: Nice dewy finish, not greasy. Personally, I prefer this sunscreen during the winter because it’s so hydrating but it’s a great all-around sunscreen.

Price and where to buy: $18.99 at blackgirlsunscreen.com, or at Brown Beauty Co-op if you’re local.

CONTROL CORRECTIVE OIL FREE SUNSCREEN 30

Rating: Broad spectrum SPF 30

What’s good: Very lightweight and oil free. Great for skins that are on the oilier side or easily clogged. I love this one in the summer months.

Finish: More matte than dewy, but not shiny at all.

Price and where to buy: $38 at controlcorrective.com

MURAD INVISIBLUR PERFECTING SHIELD BROAD SPECTRUM SPF 30 PA+++

Rating: Broad spectrum SPF 30

What’s good: Colorless so it works for all complexions, blurs imperfections and makeup application is smoother. Only comment is that if you apply too much, it will roll.

Finish: Matte, smooth finish.

Price and where to buy: $65 at ulta.com

SUPERGOOP! INVINCIBLE SETTING POWDER SPF 45 - DEEP

Rating: Broad spectrum SPF 45

What’s good: This is a good product for sunscreen reapplication – which is how I use it. I won’t really speak to it’s prowess as a setting powder but it is shine-reducing and mattifying. There are 4 colors available, the deepest one works best for me year-round. You can also purchase refills for $20.

My only negative comment is about the brush. It’s so messy, I personally don’t use it. I use the refills and dump the powder into a small container that I use with a kabuki brush. You can see what I mean here.

Finish: Matte

Price and where to buy: $30 at supergoop.com
