Hydration & Protective Layers for Winter Skincare (Body)

Updated: Dec 28, 2019

Depending on where you live, winter weather can be harsh; very cold and dry. If your skin is already dry and/or eczema prone winter can be a very uncomfortable season. Read on for an effective system that works to combat extremely dry and flaky winter skin.

  • Exfoliation. Dry skin needs exfoliation to remove those layers of skin cells and product buildup to improve the efficacy of your hydrating products. Moisturizers don’t hydrate dead cells. The LuvScrub mesh body exfoliator is a great physical exfoliant when used in the shower with a gentle cleanser. (LuvScrub Mesh Body Exfoliator, $18) I've also really enjoyed the Shea Radiance Ayate Wash Cloth, $7. This one offers a more intense, deeper exfoliation that can be used to spot treat the usual rough spots (elbows, knees, feet) or all over the body.

  • Serum. A gently exfoliating AHA lotion provides light exfoliation and hydration - think of it as a treatment serum for your body. (Amlactin Daily Moisturizing Body Lotion, $16 or REN AHA Smart Renewal Body Serum, $42)

  • Hydration. Soothing oils moisturize, calm and keep skin sot and smooth. (Raw Shea Butter Baby Oil Rub, $11)

  • Sealant. Whipped shea butter and/or Vaseline is a great last step in a winter body care regimen. Shea butter is an emollient that will soften and condition the skin while Vaseline is an effective occlusive that prevents moisture loss and protects skin from the elements. (Shea Radiance Whipped Shea Butter, $22)

As always, listen to your skin. If you don’t understand what it’s saying, see a skin expert to help translate.
